There is no merrier time for me in spring than when all the fruit trees in our garden start blooming. I love trimming branches and rearranging everything in the house to display these beauties. While we mostly tend to place larger branches like these on dining tables, kitchen counters and mantels, I thought I’d show you how to style them for your coffee table this time.
Let’s start with the branches. I like to cut branches that have a bit more of an interesting shape to them. The one on the left curves adds some nice organic flow to the shape of the arrangement. Start arranging the branches one by one by using a lower, wide vase or pitcher. The idea here is to keep things imperfect. Just leave space for other objects to exist under the arrangement. I recommend a large flower frog for the bottom of your pitcher if you have trouble keeping the branches in place.
Next, we add a few elements in an odd number. If you have a smaller coffee table, you could do three of these. A round marble tray, and stack of books are always a winning combo. When mixing objects, you want to be conscious of shape, height, and flow. Here, the marble tray was the largest element to start with. Pillar candles were added for a bit of height which helps connect the eye from the tall branches to the lower elements on the table. To balance this ‘heavier’ element on the right, a nice stack of books were kept on the left.
I hunted around the house for some pieces that would work with the palette and style I had started with once I had those larger elements sorted. Filling a vintage wood bowl with glass beads has been one of my favorite tricks. I chose white with a soft pink to bring out the color of the blossoms. Beads bring such a nice organic movement to the setting.
Then, I added the single book. I wanted another square element here but I didn’t necessarily want another tray. I added three simple elements to the book considering it as it’s own styling surface. A tiny vase filled with more blossoms, a matchbook and a favorite rock in a soft green.
Lastly, I did some final layering. More rocks were added in with the candles to fill in the tray a bit and also to combine with the other rock. A vintage brass dish containing seashells was topped with the stack of books along with another matchbook. You could also use coasters.
Whether you have a minimalist or a maximalist approach, the right mix of accessories will complement how to style your coffee table, whether it’s large or small, glass, wood, square, rectangular, or an organic shape.
